My mission is for every student with whom I work to succeed academically (GRADUATE!) and to grow personally in the process.  I facilitate that process by serving as a coach, learning strategist, educational consultant, problem solver, counselor, and mentor.

COACHING

  • Customizing coaching plans based on students' unique cognitive profiles

  • Establishing a collaborative relationship with students within the context of an accepting, positive, and nurturing environment

  • Helping students set and achieve academic and personal goals

  • Guiding students in time management, organization, prioritization, and task management/completion

  • Leading students in proactively solving problems as they arise

  • Assisting students in managing assignments, deadlines, correspondence, and commitments

  • Leading students in developing insight into personal strengths and weaknesses

  • Guiding students in effectively identifying and managing their emotions as well as understanding and responding to others' emotions.

  • Helping students identify, understand and accept their strengths and weaknesses

  • Leveraging students' strengths to facilitate success and celebrating successes

EXECUTIVE FUNCTIONING

  • Assisting students in breaking down assignments into manageable tasks

  • Helping students organize, allocate, plan, and monitor their time

  • Creating semester calendars with all test and assignment due dates

  • Developing reminder systems/strategies and monitoring task completion to ensure assignments get finished on time and deadlines are met

  • Implementing organizational systems for managing academic materials

  • Leading students through the problem solving process

  • Aiding students in managing distractions

  • Serving as an external source of motivation and reinforcement

LEARNING STRATEGIES & STUDY SKILLS

  • Devising strategies to leverage academic strengths and minimize the impact of academic weaknesses

  • Teaching before class (text-book reading and lecture preparation), during class (note-taking, test-taking, test-anxiety), and after class (test preparation, mnemonic strategies) study strategies.

  • Explaining the what, when, where, why & how of studying

EDUCATIONAL PLANNING

  •  Educating & advising students about SMU's curriculum, policies, & procedures

  • Designing balanced class schedules that take into account ADHD-related needs

  • Guiding students with selection of majors, minors​, professors, and courses

  • Creating 4-year graduation plans

SMU-SPECIFIC ASSISTANCE

  • Reviewing Degree Progress Reports and guiding students through the selection of courses, professors, & curriculum requirements

  • Ensuring students are cleared to register and enrolling students for classes

  • Assisting students in procuring academic accommodations

  • Helping students complete petitions as needed

  • Completing paperwork with students for declaring majors and minors, obtaining advanced approval of transfer credit, registering for internship credit, etc.

  • Applying for graduation

STRATEGIES, SYSTEMS, & STRUCTURE

  • Helping students develop habits, routines, & rituals to increase productivity

  • Devising and implementing organizational systems and structure

  • Creating daily, weekly, and semester schedules and checklists

  • Serving as a predictable and orienting touchpoint for students

SELF-AWARENESS & SELF-ADVOCACY

  • Educating students about the ADHD diagnosis

  • Enhancing student self-esteem and self-confidence through understanding, awareness, skill building, & role-playing

  • Informing students of legal rights

  • Assisting students in communicating with, and acquiring academic accommodations from, DASS

  • Communicating with professors via email, in class, and in office hours

LEVERAGING TECHNOLOGY

  • Introducing students to apps and websites that assist with ADHD, learning, and productivity

  • Recommending assistive-technology as needed

  • Advising students on strategies for managing distractions

PERSONAL & SOCIAL WELLNESS

  • Helping students understand, process & manage emotions

  • Supporting students struggling with the multiple demands of college life

  • Guiding students in building healthy habits including exercise, sleep, stress management, & mindfulness

  • Educating students about the perils of self-medicating with drugs and alcohol

CONSULTATIONS & COLLABORATION

  • Assisting with medication compliance & monitoring of side effects

  • Providing referrals to Dallas area medical & mental health professionals

  • Collaborating with doctors, therapists, etc.
